Good News for Me

Yesterday must have been my lucky day.  First and foremost, I accepted a job offer.  My new employer offered to pay me at the high end of the position's pay spectrum, and there is some sort of profit-sharing deal as well.  What does this mean for Chrontendo?  It means I'll be too busy to work on new episodes since I'll be investing all my spare time in coke and hookers.  Actually... no, it means episode production might slow down a bit.  But I managed to crank out episodes while being employed full-time in the past, so it shouldn't be a problem now.  The coke and hookers binge is strictly temporary, I assure you.

I was naturally quite happy with this turn of events, so a bit later in the day I decided to buy myself a few bottles of fancy beer: the sort of beer that a man on unemployment ("the dole" for our UK readers) should not be buying.  Astute readers will recall a few posts back, and remember that this hasn't stopped me in the past.   As I'm shopping at my local big box liquor store (we have liquor stores the size of supermarkets in Cali; I'm not sure that every part of the world has these.  We don't have drive up liquor stores, however,) one of the employees notices the contents of my basket and informs me that they just got in a limited quantity of Pliny the Elder, and it's stashed in the back room.   They received 48 bottles and now have nine left.  Naturally I took a few bottles.  For those of you who are not beer fanatics, Pliny the Elder is a hard to find, high regarded Double IPA.  So highly regarded that it somehow manages to average an A+ rating on Beer Advocate.  How the hell does one "average" an A+, anyway?  It's so hard to find that individual bottles sell for $12.00 plus postage on EBay.  I happen to live in a city with a pub that sells it on tap, but still... it's not the sort of beer you see sitting on a shelf every day.

So anyway... I hope to have Chrontendo Episode 36 ready by the time my new job starts, but I can't 100% guarantee it.

Oh yes: for those new to the site who have found us due to the "Games, Dammit!" podcast or other things... Welcome, and I'm sorry I just talked about beer in this post instead of video games.  The next post will be all video-gamey, OK?

I know beer shops as big as supermarkets, we call them "beverage markets" (at least thats a pretty accurate translation) and have many sorts of beer, liquors, spirits and softdrinks. I love these places, and you find them everywhere in germany. I have one around the conrer, just 5 minutes by foot, and they know me pretty good by now...

I'm not surprised that Germany would have those sorts of places! Come to think of it, the big liquor stores sell a good selection of soda as well. It's the place to go for those who want a big selection of fancy, all-natural or exotic sodas -- or, of course, the fabled Mexican Coke.

I am one of the new users that heard about your site, and mission, from Games Dammit. I have already plowed through 30 episodes of Chrontendo, have the remaining 6, the six episodes of ChronSega, and the episode of ChronTurbo waiting. I love it.

Oh, and congrats on the new job.

Hoorary for beer! And jobs to justify beer! And Power Blade on NES: good with beer!

I learned about the show from the 1UP podcast and am already on episode 32, plus a couple Chronsegas and the Chronturbo for good measure! What a hoot your videos are... thank you! Wow is all I can say. There's only been one game I've wanted to add to: 3D Hot Rally. You said there wasn't anything particularly remarkable about the game. Well what about the 3D glasses? I believe in a Chronsega you lauded the Master System's glasses as superior technology to the Famicom, but are you sure both systems didn't in fact use similar if not the same glasses? It was also mentioned in a recent Iwata Asks that this title was the first time then-Hal employee Iwata collaborated with Miyamoto.

My favorite segment so far has been the coverage of SMB 2/USA. I'd never thought to question the anecdotal 'gee this game will be too hard for them Yanks, why don't we gussie up that goofy promo game we just happened to have sitting around?' But your comments in support of the game as an actual 'stealth' sequel even during initial development ring true to me!

Congratulations on the job and the beer! Not a drinker myself but just the same I was stoked when one of the local BevMo's found a couple cases of Jolt Cola in the back last month.

Which pub in So Cal has Pliny on tap? Might need to make a pilgrimage.

congrats on getting some pliny...and a job to pay for it.

Teknohed - I'm actually in Norcal - the civilized part of California. Specifically, Sacramento, a city that no one has ever made a pilgrimage to. The pub is http://pangaeatwobrews.com/ - the only place I've ever seen to have Pliny on tap on a permanent basis.

Hey Dr. Sparkle, you inspired me to try to seek out a bottle of Pliny the Elder. Turns out that you just can't get that here in Iowa... evidently, as I understand it, the "blue laws" are pretty strict here and beers with a certain alcohol amount just aren't sold in the whole state. I've been told that that law was modified and relaxed somewhat back in August, but apparently still not quite enough to allow a good number of beers in. When I go back home to Illinois this weekend, I think I'll make a pilgrimage to Friar Tuck (a rather large liquor superstore) to see if I can find a bottle.

And a big congrats on the new job!

Hi there, Dr. Sparkle! I did indeed discover your series through the Games Dammit! podcast, and I, like so many others have attested on your blog, have plowed through almost 30 episodes already. I won't offer any feedback concerning your coverage because this has been a true learning experience. I've been a lifelong fan of video games and have read a thing or two on the history of them, but this sort of in-depth analysis has been humbling and illuminating. This may seem somewhat abrupt, but here it is all the same.

I'm creating a documentary on retro video games and the fanatics who love them for my practicum at my university. It would be a huge coup if you were gracious enough to give me a Skype interview for the project. If you are at all interested let me know. My name is Matt McNeely and my e-mail is matt.mcneely@sbcglobal.net. Thanks for the consideration and keep up the great work!
